Having sore knees is common and isn't usually a sign of anything serious. There are many possible causes, which can range from a simple muscle strain or tendonitis to some kind of arthritis. Knee pain may sometimes be the result of a sports or other injury. Sometimes a cause can't be found. Knee pain can often be treated at home and you should start to feel better in a few days. As you age, getting knee pain may become more common. You're also more at risk of getting knee pain if you are overweight.

The location and severity of knee pain may vary, depending on the cause of the problem. Signs & Symptoms include:

  • Pain during knee movement
  • Pain in hips

Osteoarthritis is age-related wear and tear of the joint. Due to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis, the cartilage cushion gets badly eroded which lies in between the bones.

The soft bone which connects thigh and leg bone, known as cartilage, gets eroded. This disease progresses with age. Some patients may develop symptoms early. Surgery is not always required but helps improve quality of life when necessary. Modern knee replacement lasts 25–30 years.

There are four grades: Mild, Moderate, Severe, Complex. An X-ray is taken while standing.

The early stages of osteoarthritis can be managed by improving lifestyle habits.

Improve sedentary habits, reduce weight, maintain nutrition, get sunlight, avoid prolonged standing, and include physical activity.

When walking, standing, climbing stairs, and daily activities become difficult, surgery is recommended.

Severe osteoarthritis usually occurs after 50, but can happen earlier. Surgery depends on medical fitness.
